Alexander Bright

by Cameron Bright

I have heard that, although he would probably be late, Alec Bright never missed a skiing party. My favorite story of my father and his association with the Ski Club Hochgebirge occurred during the first winter after his

return from World War II. It was a dark, cold Friday night, and my father, hoping to arrive in time to spend the evening convivially with other Hochies, was driving north with a friend through New Hampshire in his Cadillac. Near Plymouth, the lights of a state police car appeared in his rear view mirror. Dutifully pulling over, he greeted the uniformed sergeant and immediately protested, “There may have been times when you have caught me speeding, but this time I was not going an inch over the speed limit.” The sergeant waved away the protest and, extending his hand in warmth, replied, “I just want to welcome you back from the war. It’s good to see you again.”………………...

Jim working on the Larsen Memorial Door

2023 Fall Work Weekend

There were record numbers in attendance for the fall work weekend held on 11/4 & 5/23. We had 19 adults and 5 children!

Tasks undertaken were: honeymoon suite and the bath at the top of the stairs were painted-walls, trim and ceiling ( 2 coats+), the chimney clean outs in the cellar were emptied, the stove and ovens were thoroughly cleaned, all bedspreads and mattress covers were washed, front door was planed so it no longer sticks, at least one drain was snaked, faulty electrical outlet in the Honeymoon Suite was replaced, all knives were sharpened, trophies polished. Jim Larsen proved that he truly has OCD or is it that he graduated from MIT? He worked the entire weekend on the door to the dressing room which was previously a rather small opening but is now full sized! The job was not completed when I left on Sunday around 4PM. So far this has taken him 2 work weekends (spring & fall) it's kind of a nightmare but it gives him something to do and we are grateful for his participation. At 3:30 Sunday afternoon Hans and Geoffrey were still working on the leaky maids quarters toilet. Jim was still working at this door project as well and did not wrap that up until late Sunday evening!

2023 Annual Dinner

Above: Former Presidents Rob Standley & Trina Abbott at cocktails before supper

There were 35 members and guests attending. Outgoing president, Greg Anthony welcomed all to the 93rd Ski Club Hochgebirge annual dinner. Greg introduced 2023 new members Chris Macek, Sinan Kunt and Mark O’Connor. Additionally Greg introduced new nominee Janet White who was the guest of Nick Burke. As well as speaker Bill Lynn and wife Sara.

Greg also reported that longtime member Al Hobart who joined the club in 1969, passed away in 2023. Greg shared an account from Mo Carne wife of member Fred Carne. She reports that Fred will not be renewing his membership. Fred was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2021. The disease has progressed rapidly with significant cognitive issues. He is currently in an assisted living facility.

RJ Lyman immediately nominated Fred Carne for Gatekeeper status. His proposal was seconded and confirmed by the members in attendance.

Before supper Greg then read the following:

Now for something completely different. I would like to ask everyone to join hands and bow your heads:

Don't get nervous!

Please Support

The Herreshoff Museum

In appreciation of Bill Lynn's presentation at this years annual dinner. We are asking our members to make a donation.

Like SCH, the Herreshoff Marine Museum (HMM) is an organization supported by members and benefactors that celebrates sports history. It is fitting that organizations like ours support each other. Unfortunately, current club finances (although improving) preclude our making a direct donation to HMM this year.

Your support helps the museum continue to inspire the next generation of problem-solvers with excellent programming including the monthly Herreshoff Lecture Series, Summer Sunset Music Series, the Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta, and the STEM Boat Building Program.

Please click link above or below we are providing a QR code so that any of our membership who would like to make a donation may do so. Simply click on or point your phone camera at the code and you will be taken to the HMM site.

Thank you.

2023 Annual Business Meeting

This years annual business meeting experienced delays and was slightly abbreviated because of an unannounced Democrat party fundraiser featuring President Biden and James Taylor in the near by theater district. In addition there was a substantial protest against the war in Gaza in the same neighborhood. On our walk to from the parking lot, we were greeted by chants of, “Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Genocide Joe, has to go”. Long story short it was a mess getting to the Tavern Club......
